One autumn when the leaves fell fast, the fox asked the oak: "Do you ever wish you could move?" The oak said nothing. But a single acorn dropped at the fox's feet, and the fox understood.
She carried it home and planted it in her garden. The soil there was rocky and poor, and she did not expect much. But she watered it every morning on her way to the clearing, and every evening on her way back.
The sapling came up crooked. It leaned south, toward the light, and no amount of staking would convince it otherwise. The fox stopped trying after the first winter and let it grow the way it wanted.
Years later, when she was old and slow and the walk to the clearing was too long for her legs, she would sit beneath her own small oak instead. It was still crooked. She had come to love that about it.
She would lean her back against the bark the way she had leaned against the old tree, and close her eyes, and listen.

The old oak never did speak. But everything it ever needed to say, it had already said.
One spring, when the fox no longer came out every morning, the little oak stood alone in the garden. Its branches were still crooked, and its leaves still turned toward the sun as if they were listening for something.
Birds nested there. Beetles climbed its bark. Rabbits rested in its shade when the day grew warm. And sometimes, when the wind moved through the leaves just right, the garden sounded very much like the old clearing.
The fox had thought she was planting an acorn. But she had planted a place to return to.
Years passed. The little oak grew taller, though never straight. Its roots pushed deep between the stones. Its branches reached wide over the garden wall. And beneath it, the grass stayed soft and green.
Other foxes came sometimes. They sat under the crooked tree and watched the leaves tremble above them.
The tree never spoke. But it listened. And that, as one old fox had known long ago, was sometimes the kindest thing a tree could do.
